We aim to improve the health and wellbeing of adults with a developmental disability in Queensland,
through multi-disciplinary research, education and clinical practice.
Goals
The Centre is dedicated to pursuing the following goals:
- The dissemination of knowledge and the development of education to undergraduate students, general practitioners, other medical and health practitioners and disability service providers
- The initiation and participation in the preparation of applications for research funding
- Supervise and conduct research projects relevant to the health of people with developmental disabilities
- The provision of clinical services to people with developmental disabilities and contribute to the collaborative clinical work of the Unit team
- The provision of telephone consultative service to practitioners who work with people with developmental disabilities
- Fostering links with organisations and individuals involved in the care of people with developmental disabilities in the community, including general practitioners, specialist medical practitioners, allied health professionals, Disability Services Queensland and its employees, Queensland Health and key community based organisations
Objectives
Education
- To increase the quality and quantity of education in the Graduate Medical Course regarding the care of people with developmental disabilities
- To provide excellence in post-graduate education for GPs, Health professionals and specialist medical practitioners and postgraduate medical trainees
- To provide accessible and useable information for medical, health professionals and non-medical practitioners
- To maintain a handbook for medical, health and disability professionals on the health care of people with intellectual disabilities
Research
- To establish a research agenda that addresses health issues relevant to people with developmental disabilities in particular primary health service provision
- To collaborate with other researchers in Queensland
- To promote and participate in collaborative research with centres in Australia and the international community
Clinic
- To maintain a clinical consultative medical service
- To provide telephone consultancy services to medical practitioners, mental health services, allied health professionals, families and disability service providers
- To provide excellence and clinical leadership in the clinical management of people with developmental disabilities in Queensland
- To develop a multi-disciplinary team that includes GP, physician and other health professionals
- To develop strategies to address the needs of centres outside SouthEast Queensland
Policy
- To advise the Disability Services Queensland and Queensland Health on the development of policy for people with intellectual disabilities
- To further develop close National and International links with professionals in the area
- To provide national and international leadership in the development of Health Targets for the World Health Organisation
Community Liaison
- To foster links with community organisations such as the Endeavour Foundation
- To provide tertiary health consultancy services
- To work collaboratively with community agencies and employees of Disabilty Services Queensland
