Student Accommodation

The RCS provides a range of accommodation options for students at each RCS site and may include residency at University owned or leased premises, use of hospital staff accommodation or rental subsidies for couples/families whose personal circumstances will require alternative arrangements.

Bundaberg

Rockhampton

Toowoomba

Hervey Bay / Maryborough

Attention is invited to the RCS’s administrative guideline for Student Accommodation.

Typically, University owned or leased accommodation is fully furnished and contained with a standardised inventory. Residents are expected to make their own arrangements for the acquisition/supply of any additional goods and chattels.

In the case of University owned or leased accommodation:

-  Broadband internet services are available to each premises.  Dependent on location and the number of concurrent users, however, service provision can be limited. Students may find it more convenient to make a private arrangement with the Internet Service Provider of their choice.

-     The Rural Clinical School does not provide telephony as one of the services routinely available to residents. The RCS will make a contribution to the expense incurred by a resident who arranges a telephone service at a unit where no previous telephone service has existed. In 2008/09, residents are able to seek reimbursement up to $174 for a new service (or $54 where an additional service is sought).

Residents will be responsible to organise the connection and must, where necessary, make the arrangements for supervised access by a technician. Residents must supply their own handset.

* An upfront non-refundable annual charge will be applied to all students occupying RCS supplied/managed accommodation.  This charge is a contribution to the cost of fitting out and maintaining units - including the provision of outgoings such as electricity.  The charge does include additional charges that might apply in the case of property damage and/or cleaning.

In 2008/09, the accommodation charge is $300.

Library Services

The RCS, in conjunction with the UQ Library and with the support of local Health Service Districts, has established Library service points at each of the RCS sites.

The RCS is committed to providing optimal information services to staff and students, irrespective of their geographical location.  A Liaison Librarian is based in each of Rockhampton and Toowoomba with responsibility for regular periods “in residence” to the Bundaberg and Hervey Bay sites, as well as providing a range of support services to staff and students at teaching hospitals and practices throughout Central and South West Queensland.

Clinical Skills Training Units

The RCS has established a clinical skills training program with the view to providing students and other participants the opportunity to acquire clinical and procedural skills in a safe and low-risk environment.  The skills that are taught are wide ranging - procedural and diagnostic together with communication and team dynamics.

Flexibility in the use of space and resources enables simulation of the simplest procedure through to the most complex clinical scenario.

There are purpose-built Clinical Skills Training Units in Rockhampton and Toowoomba where available equipment and facilities currently include a range of high fidelity patient simulators and task trainers as well as real time and on line audio visual and multimedia resources.
