Eligibility Criteria for Academic Titles - CHECKLIST
This Checklist provides a quick guide to the eligibility criteria for the awarding of academic titles. For full details refer to the Handbook of University Policies & Procedures 5.20.05 (Academic Titles for Externally Funded Health Professionals), 5.80.12 (Academic Promotion Level A - D) and 5.80.14 (Promotion to Professor).
Associate Lecturer (Level A)
Four years of tertiary study completed or equivalent qualification and experience, may be required to hold a relevant higher degree.
Contribute to teaching of undergraduate and graduate diploma level.
Undertake some administration primarily relating to teaching or research activities.
Lecturer (Level B)
Doctoral/masters qualification or equivalent accreditation standing.
Contribute to teaching at undergraduate, honours and postgraduate level.
Initiation and development of course material.
Conduct of research.
Perform a range of administrative functions.
Senior Lecturer (Level C)
Doctoral qualification or equivalent accreditation and standing. Demonstrated record of scholarly and professional achievement in the relevant discipline area.
Initiation and development of program material.
Significant role in research projects including, where appropriate, leadership of a research team.
Conduct research and coordinate programs.
Perform broad range of administrative functions.
Reader/Associate Professor (Level D)
Doctoral qualification or equivalent accreditation and standing. Demonstrated record of academic excellence as evidenced by an outstanding contribution to teaching and/or research and/or the profession.
Development of and responsibility for curriculum/programs of study.
Conduct research, including leadership of a large research team where appropriate.
Significant contribution to the profession, and/or relevant discipline.
Program co-ordination and high-level administrative functions.
Outstanding scholarship and original achievement, supported by excellent teaching performance and at least adequate (valued) service to the University; excellent scholarship and original achievement, supported by outstanding teaching and superior service to the University.
Professor (Level E)
International reputation for outstanding research and scholarship as exemplified by scholarly publications, performances, creative works, invitations to give keynote addresses, success in obtaining research grants, election to learned academies, higher degrees, honorary degrees, awards and prizes;
Outstanding teaching achievements / Research leadership;
Guiding the professional development of others, particularly postgraduate students, through supervision and collaboration to a successful outcome;
Administrative accomplishments of a substantial nature which have produced demonstrable benefit to the University; (Holding an administrative post would not fulfill this criterion; applicants must be able to demonstrate significant achievements in office or previous role/s);
Professional peer recognition of significant achievements at a state, national or international level, exemplified by leadership of learned societies and outstanding contributions to continuing education.
