Site Organisation

The web site is organised into two main sections. The "Information For" section and the "Information About" section.

The "Information For" Section

The "Information For" section is used to house topics that are relevant for a particular user group of the web site. If you fall into one of these groups you will not generally need to use the other sections of the site. This reduces the number of pages of interest to a member of one of these user groups and therefore make information easier to find. The user groups are:

  • Future Students - for users who are thinking about enroling to attend one of the School of Medicine programs i.e. MBBS, Research Higher Degrees or Postgraduate Coursework Programs
  • Future Staff - for users who are thinking of working at the School of Medicine as a staff member
  • Current Students - for users who are currently undertaking one of the School of Medicine programs i.e. MBBS, Research Higher Degrees or Postgraduate Coursework Programs
  • Current Staff - for users who are currently working at the School of Medicine
  • Alumni - for users who have completed their studies at the School of Medicine

The "Information About" Section

The "Information About" section is used to house topics that are of a general nature and may be of interest to all users. These topics are designed to give a general overview of the School of Medicine and houses topics that outline the purpose, mission and vision of the School of Medicine as well as give an indication of how the School is organised as well as what programs are on offer and what research activities are occurring. This section of the site links into the "Information For" section of the site where applicable.

Site Navigation

Links

There are two type of links throughout the web site.

Content Page Links

Links used on a section content page are always blue. If you hover your mouse over the link it will become black with a blue underline to indicate that it can be clicked with the mouse.

Normal Content Page Link - is an unclicked link

Content Page Link when Mouse is Hovered over it - is a clicked link

Web Page Text Links

Links used within the text of a web page are blue if they have never been clicked by you before or brown if you have clicked the link before (see graphic below).

Main Navigation Menu

Main Navigation Menu

The main navigation menu is located on the left hand side of every page.
It lists all the major sections of the site and allow the user to jump quickly
from one major section to another.

Global Links Menu

The global links bar is located underneath the University of Queensland logo on every page. It contains links to:

  • SOM Home - a link to the home page of the web site
  • MBBS Portal - a link to the home page of the MBBS portal web site. You will need a username and password to access the MBBS portal web site
  • Help - a link to this page; the help page
  • Site Map - a link to a map of the site's sections and all pages within (see below for an explanation)
  • Print - a link that will print the page being viewed

UQ Links Menu

UQ Links Menu

The UQ Links Menu is location in the middle at the top of every page. It allows the user to access regularly used sections of the University of Queenslands web site. These sections are:

Site Map

The site map is accessible through the global links menu from any page. It links to all sections and pages within the site and allows the users to jump to a specific page quickly. It is also useful for getting an overview of the topics within the site.

Search Bar

Search Bar

A search bar is located on the top right hand side of every page. Click on "Enter keywords" and type in what you are looking for. Click the "Search" button to perform your search and be presented with the results. At the current time, all UQ web sites will be searched for results. We will soon be offering the user the option to just search the School of Medicine web site.

Breadcrumb

Breadcrumbs

The "Breadcrumbs" are located on each page underneath the Global Links Menu and the Search Bar. These are designed to let the user know where they are in the site hierarchy. You can see from the graphic above that the user is on the "Applying for the MBBS Programs" page as it is the last page mentioned (coloured black) in the breadcrumb and from the page heading just below it. You can also see that the Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) section is one level up from the current page and that the "Future Students" section is one further level up from that. Clicking on the blue links will take you to that section. Breadcrumbs are useful in allowing the user to "back out" of the current page.

Section Contents Pages

Section Contents Pages

Each site section begins with a Section Content page. These show the pages within a section and consist of the title of the page on the left (in blue) and a description of what can be found on that page on the right. Clicking on a page title will take the user to that page.
